The Board of County Supervisors yesterday proclaimed May 11-17, 2008, as National Police Week. The Board also proclaimed May 15, 2008, as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in Prince William County. The Board, in passing the resolution, requested that Prince William County citizens make a special effort to let officers from various law enforcement agencies know they are appreciated for their work in making the County a safe place to live, work and play. Each May, communities nationwide pay tribute to the thousands of law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. The Prince William County Police Department has suffered two line-of-duty deaths since its inception in 1970: Officer Philip Michael “Mike” Pennington on November 22, 1990, and Officer Paul Thomas “Pete” White, Jr. on October 27, 1973. “It is proper and fitting that we give special recognition to, and remember those law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty from Prince William County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and our nation,” said Police Chief Charlie T. Deane. “We also give special recognition to those who continue to courageously and conscientiously maintain a delicate balance between the liberty of the individual and a high degree of social protection.” The Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association – comprised of individuals who have graduated from the Department’s Citizen Police Academy – is hosting a National Police Week service and tribute to fallen officers on Wednesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at the Dr. A.J. Ferlazzo Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Drive, Woodbridge. The Honorable Charles J. Colgan, president pro tempore of the Senate of Virginia, is the guest speaker. Light refreshments will be served in the atrium beginning at 6:30 p.m. This event is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend.
